GelKore ADSS Loose Tube Optical Cables (Long Span)

 (Average Span: 2,625 ft. / 800 m)

Stranded Buffer Tube Cables with 2-216 Optical Fibers

1. General

This specification covers the design requirements and performance standards for the supply of optical fiber cables as described below.  The features described in this document are intended to provide information on the performance of the optical cable and aid in handling and installation.  Please refer to the separate fiber specification for details regarding the optical fiber.

1.1 Cable Description

The Loose Tube optical cables contain 2-216 optical fibers.  The color-coded fibers are housed in multiple color-coded plastic buffer tubes, which are stranded around a dielectric central strength member.  Water blocking compound, filling the interstices within the core, provides protection against water ingress. Aramid yarns, which provide additional tensile strength, are applied.  The cable sheath is composed of a smooth inneresheath medium (MDPE) or high density polyethylene jacket (HDPE) and additional outer-sheath MDPE or HDPE jacket.  Highly visible ripcords are placed under each jacket layer for quick sheath entry.

1.2 Quality

To meet ISO 9000 standards.

1.3 Reliability

Both initial and periodic qualification testing are performed to assure the cable's performance and durability in the field environment.

To meet industry standards organizations such as Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA), International Telecommunications Union (ITU), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Rural Utilities Service (RUS), and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

2. Cable Design

The Loose Tube optical cables utilize Reverse Oscillating Lay (ROL), also known as “SZ” of the buffer for quick and easy midspan entry.  The loose tube cables come with three different sheath constructions designed for various outside plant applications and installation techniques.

2.4 Buffer Tubes

Fibers are housed in groups of 6 or 12 within gel-filled buffer tubes.  The tubes, manufactured with industry standard polybutelene terathylate (PBT), are colored for easy identification according to the scheme shown above.  Water blocking gel fills each tube to prevent migration of water through the tube.  Industry standard tools and practices can be used to enter the buffer tubes.

12 3.0 mm (0.12 in.)

The buffer tubes are stranded around the Central Strength Member utilizing Reverse Oscillating Lay (ROL), also known as “SZ”.  SZ or ROL stranding wraps the tubes in one direction for several turns, then in the other direction, and so forth.  This technique provides transition points that lend to easy midspan access of a single buffer tube.  The number of tubes used depends on the total number of fibers within the cable.  Blank fillers are used as necessary to maintain a circular cable structure.

2.5 Central Strength Member

The central strength member is made of a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP).  The FRP rod is most popular because of its all-dielectric properties, thus not requiring grounding.  The FRP rod provides both tensile and anti-buckling strength to the cable.  Some loose tube designs require a PE up-jacketing of the central member to allow stranding of tubes in higher fiber count cables.

2.6 Cable Water Blocking

The interstices between the buffer tubes and the jacket layers are protected from water intrusion by cable flooding compounds.  The compounds can easily be removed during cable preparation with commercially available solvents.

2.7 Additional Strength Elements

In addition to the FRP central strength member, aramid yarns are helically applied over the cable core to provide additional tensile strength to the cable.

2.8 Cable Sheath

2.8.1 All-Dielectric Self Support

An Inner PE Sheath of Black PE, a compound of PE and carbon black shall be used for the cable sheath.

The non-metallic strength member such as aramid yarns etc. shall be applied over the inner PE sheath.  A strength member shall be incorporated into a cable construction designed to carry the tensile load associated with installation.

Outer PE Sheath of Black PE, a compound of PE and carbon black shall be used for the cable sheath, as it is best for preventing any lowering of mechanical strength and resisting ultra-violet radiation.

4. Testing & Inspection

The optical properties of all fibers are measured before cable manufacturing and remain traceable throughout the manufacturing process and the lifetime of the cable.

After cabling, 100% of all fibers in each length of cable are measured with bi-directional OTDR at all operating wavelengths.  The attenuation for each fiber is recorded.  Cable dimensional measurements are also made at final inspection and recorded.

5. Packaging & Shipping

Cable is supplied in lengths specified at the time of purchase.  Each length will be shipped on a separate non-returnable wooden reel.  The minimum barrel diameter of the reel will not be less than 30 times the cable diameter.

The cable on each reel will be completely covered with several layers of plastic wrap.  This wrap shall provide excellent protection to cables against moisture during transport or storage.

The cable ends will be sealed with plastic protection to prevent water penetration and the escape of water blocking gel.  The ends will be easily accessible for testing.

Each reel is marked with 4SProducts “Item Part No.”, cable type, fiber count, date of manufacture, and cable length on reel.  A final inspection test report with attenuation performance data for each fiber shall NOT be attached to the reel, but provided via mail to customer.

6. Warranty

4SProducts expressly warrants that all cables furnished shall conform to all specifications and appropriate standards manufactured under and will be new and free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of 36 months from invoice date.  4SProducts conforms that all products will conform to specifications provided and that all goods will be adequately and as agreed contained, packaged, marked, and labeled.  4S Products agrees to place or correct defects of any goods or services not conforming to the foregoing warranty promptly, without expense to its Customers, when notified of such nonconformity by its Customers.
